ACTH is frequently used as a pre-race treatment. The hormone stimulates the horse’s own adrenal gland to secrete large amounts of cortisol into the bloodstream. This causes a euphoric response in the brain as well as a potent anti-inflammatory effect at the tissue level. Dose: The normal dosage is 2.5-5.0 ml IV. 4-6 hrs prior to the event
