The Battle for Monterrey, Mexico – Web Site & Book! Fascinating Battle of the Mexican War

Mckinney, TX (PRWEB) October 25, 2010

The University of Oklahoma Press recently released the book, “A Perfect Gibraltar, the Battle for Monterrey, Mexico” that describes a fascinating but little known battle that occurred in the Mexican War. The book is a fast-paced non-fiction narrative that will interest anyone who likes a good war story well told. Check out the informative web site at http://www.battleofmonterrey.com and the video trailer at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMZOkgCz34w.

For three days in the fall of 1846, U.S. and Mexican soldiers fought fiercely in the picturesque city of Monterrey, turning the northern Mexican town, known for its towering mountains and luxurious gardens, into one of the nineteenth century’s most gruesome battlefields. Led by Brigadier General Zachary Taylor, graduates of the U.S. Military Academy encountered a city almost perfectly protected by mountains, a river, and a vast plain. Monterrey’s ideal defensive position inspired more than one U.S. soldier to call the city “a perfect Gibraltar.” The first day of fighting was deadly for the Americans, especially the newly graduated West Point cadets. But they soon adjusted their tactics and began fighting building to building.

Chris D. Dishman conveys in a vivid narrative the intensity and drama of the Battle of Monterrey, which marked the first time U.S. troops engaged in prolonged urban combat. Future Civil War generals and West Point graduates fought desperately alongside rough Texan, Mississippian, and Tennessean volunteers. General Taylor engineered one of the army’s first wars of maneuver at Monterrey by sending the bulk of his troops against the weakest part of the city, and embedded press reporters wrote eyewitness accounts of the action for readers back in the States. Dishman interweaves descriptions of troop maneuvers and clashes between units using pistols and rifles with accounts of hand-to-hand combat involving edged weapons, stones, clubs, and bare hands. He brings regular soldiers and citizen volunteers to life in personal vignettes that draw on firsthand accounts from letters, diaries, and reports written by men on both sides. An epilogue carries the narrative thread to the conclusion of the war.

Dishman has canvassed a wide range of Mexican and American sources and walked Monterrey’s streets and battlefields. Accompanied by maps and period illustrations, this skillfully written history will interest scholars, history enthusiasts, and everyone who enjoys a true war story well told.

Theresa Magliano Writes a Compelling True Story of Abuse, Torture and Survival – This Book will Keep you Reading Page After Page and Fill You With Emotion – It Truly is a Must Read

(PRWEB) June 11, 2004

What would you do if you saw someone beating a child? Do you know that yelling at a child and calling them stupid is a form of child abuse? Who do you call if you know a child is being abused? Here is a true story about a child living in a home filled with physical, mental and sexual abuse and lives to tell her story of survival as well as information about organizations that will answer some of these questions.

It is obvious that people are drawn to read this compelling book as they wait to see how Trudy will survive and overcome abuse that she has been subjected to most of her childhood.

You will find yourself sitting quietly on the sidelines rooting for her survival and triumph. “To Save One” will change your life in more ways than one.

Reviews:

To Save One is an honest, upfront journey into the insidious world of child abuse. New author Theresa Magliano, shares her life with readers. She grew up in a world that was the epitome of the dysfunctional family. Many readers will get an education on child abuse; many will relate all too easily.

Theresa didn’t know that her life was not “normal” while growing up. It’s a common side effect of child abuse. It is the dirty little secret that nobody talks about. Her strong will to survive and overcome the poverty, low self-esteem, and guilt associated with physical, sexual, and mental abuse will have readers cheering quietly from the sidelines for her survival.

The story is often raw and graphic. I would not recommend it for readers that want to believe in the “Ozzie and Harriet” myth. But for readers that want to be more cognizant of a life that is lead by our smallest, most vulnerable victims, it’s a must read!

Understanding abuse, and recognizing the signs of it, will make us a more compassionate society that will report suspected abuse and protect the children. Authors like Theresa Magliano and Dave Pelzer should be commended for sharing their stories. It is often painful, but the determination to survive and move forward is compelling. I could not put this book down. It is a fast paced, powerful read.

Reviewed by Kathy Bosworth for Denice’s Pieces Book Review

In Theresa Magliano’s book “To Save One”, she tells the heart wrenching true story of how her and her siblings survived the constant mental, physical and sexual abuse of their father. At a very young age they were subjected to this kind of behavior. Something no child should ever have to endure.

As I read “To Save One”, I began to feel sorry for what they went through, but then I realized that I shouldn’t feel that way because they triumphed. They rose above what their father had been and became better people because of it. Besides I don’t believe Theresa wrote this book for our pity, she wrote it to help save those who find themselves in the same situation as she had.

Theresa has taken a life altering experience and put it into words. She chose to speak of it and not hide it. That’s something to be admired. It’s the reviewer’s opinion that Theresa Magliano has written a story that will touch your life in more ways than one. This is one book that I recommend everyone read.

Essential Book for Busy Parents

Essential Book for Busy Parents

OTTAWA (PRWEB) September 10, 2005

Parents will be thankful with the release of the first edition of a new, convenient and comprehensive guide consisting of products, services, activities and programs for children in the Ottawa-Gatineau area. It will provide parents, grandparents and caregivers resources and ideas for keeping their little ones active and in style.

“Our goal as publishers of Kids Ottawa and Gatineau is to provide families with children ages newborn to sixteen with a tremendously useful resource book, and to provide businesses and organizations with a very effective vehicle for reaching the children’s marketplace,” says Nancy Elias, Co-Publisher of the book. “Readers of the book will find hundreds of listings for children’s activities, programs, retailers, things to do, family services, and parenting information and support, to name just a few, plus valuable savings.”

Alison Foley Howard, Nancy’s business partner, adds, “We saw a need in the marketplace for an annually updated resource that is a comprehensive guide to everything that is available for children and families. The concept for Kids Ottawa and Gatineau was born, and as we began researching, developing, and marketing the book, the response we received was tremendous. “

For a low retail price of $ 11.95 the directory is an affordable must-have for consumers. The book is geared for children ages newborn to sixteen and has more than 1700 listings in 27 categories, including afterschool activities, birthday parties, day camps, family outings, parenting support, pre and post natal, and children’s clothing, furniture, and toy retailers. The directory also features a coupon section representing valuable savings. It will be sold through bookstores and children’s stores, and will also be available to consumers through http://www.kidsottawa.com.

Nancy and Alison both have young children and as they ventured into the world of pregnancy and parenting they saw that there was an abundance of great products and services available to children and parents in the region, but no comprehensive resource of the things Ottawa-Gatineau has to offer. As experienced business professionals with backgrounds as an entrepreneur and a consultant they decided to develop and market the directory, satisfying both market demand and their own need for creating a work environment that suits their family life.

Nancy claims, “Alison and I complement each other very well as partners – we offer different skills, interests, experience, and strengths to the equation and I think both of us can say we couldn’t have done it without the other. The start up of the business has been a very positive experience.”

“I certainly concur with Nancy about the setup experience and our skills. We have great ideas and energy for the ongoing development of the business, but will keep it at a manageable pace, so that we can balance our work life and family life, which is key,” states Alison.

For media enquiries please call Jennifer Forbes at (613) 295-7180.

*All businesses and organizations that are relevant to the book are included as a free listing. If they would like more exposure in the book they may upgrade their listing with a longer description and larger heading, and they may also place advertisements and/or coupons in the book. This in turn gives more value to the reader as it provides more information, and in the case of coupons, offers valuable savings.

For more advertising information please contact Nancy at (613) 722-2360.

Florida Author, Linnea Sinclair, Wins National Book Award

Florida Author, Linnea Sinclair, Wins National Book Award

Naples, Florida (PRWEB) August 7, 2006

With bookshelves full of top-notch vampire and werewolf romance stories, who would have thought a starship-based intergalactic romantic thriller would take the coveted RITA (c) award for Best Paranormal Romance of 2006? Certainly not Bantam Spectra author and Naples, Florida resident, Linnea Sinclair, who never prepared an acceptance speech, even though she was a finalist.

“I was thrilled just to have my name up there with the likes of best selling authors Catherine Asaro, Teresa Medeiros, and Heather Graham,” Sinclair said, admitting she fought the urge to genuflect when those authors’ photos came on the ballroom’s screens in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis on July 29. “I honestly don’t know how the judges could decide a winner.”

The RITA(c), according to RWA public relations manager, Nicole Kennedy, is the most sought-after award in romance publishing today. Over 1,000 entries were narrowed down to 94 finalists in 13 categories. Sinclair’s Gabriel’s Ghost was one of the lucky 13 winners. Her Finders Keepers,

also a romance-based science fiction novel, was a RITA finalist in the Best First Book category.

Sinclair’s winning novel about a disgraced fleet captain and her mysterious rescuer has garnered many five-star reviews but is not, despite its title, a ghost story. “Captain Chasidah ‘Chaz’ Bergren finds herself fighting for her life on a desolate prison planet when her former, now supposedly dead, nemesis comes to rescue her,” Sinclair explained. “But mercenary Gabriel ‘Sully’ Sullivan isn’t quite what he seems, nor is he honest about his reasons for wanting Chaz by his side. It’s an intense, very fast-paced story which literally wrote itself in thirty-four days a few years ago. The original idea for the story blossomed during an adult creative writing class I took at a local high school here in Naples.”

Sinclair said after the awards ceremony, that had over 2,000 attendees, one of the judges told her it was the engaging personality of her hero, Sully, that cinched her winning vote. “He was that way when I was writing him, too!” Sinclair admitted. “He wouldn’t let me sleep and kept waking me up at 5 a.m., pushing me to ‘go write! go write!.’”

Sully will get another chance to prod her in Chasida’s Choice, the sequel to Gabriel’s Ghost, due out from Bantam Spectra in late 2007 or early 2008.

New Book: ‘The Men’s Guide to the Women’s Bathroom’ by Jo Barrett

New Book: ‘The Men’s Guide to the Women’s Bathroom’ by Jo Barrett

New York and Houston (PRWEB) March 27, 2007

Like the lead character of her new novel, Texas author Jo Barrett has spent considerable time in women’s bathrooms noting the joys and sorrows she overheard – so much time, she says, that her friends suggest that she has a law degree from Georgetown and a PhD in Bathrooms.

Barrett’s debut novel – “The Men’s Guide to the Women’s Bathroom” (ISBN: 978-0-06-112861-5; $ 13.95, released by William Morrow) – began as a non-fiction project that explored the social evolution of women’s bathrooms since the Industrial Revolution.

According to Barrett, “With this book, I attempted to answer the age-old question: ‘What are you ladies doing in there?’ The bathroom is a place of real bonding for women. You rarely hear the words ‘mind your own business’ in the women’s bathroom. I originally envisioned this book as non-fiction with research of contemporary culture, but ended up with a novel perfect for the beach or a weekend trip, mixed with some fascinating history of the women’s bathroom. I’m grateful that the book has been so well received and has been compared to other works such as ‘Sex and the City.’”

Barrett’s fresh, fast-paced novel provides a whimsical behind-the-scenes look at life in women’s bathrooms through the eyes of Claire St. John, a divorced 30-something professional who has given up her high-profile New York legal career to return home to Austin, Texas. There she finds the inspiration to write the ultimate guidebook on what goes on behind the door marked ‘Women,’ while trying to right the course of her own personal life.

The book has been optioned by CBS and Paramount Studios with actor Hugh Jackman’s production company, Seed Productions, attached to produce. Mr. Jackman said, “It’s a great read and a great laugh – and now we guys know what’s really going on in there.”

According to Texas Monthly magazine, Barrett has produced ‘a spunky debut novel’ that aspires ‘to break through the glass bookshelf of the chick-lit ghetto.’

Barrett has a three-book deal with Avon A+, an Imprint of HarperCollinsPublishers, and her follow-up novel, ‘Killing Carlton,’ will be published early next year.

More information about “The Men’s Guide to the Women’s Bathroom” can be found online at: http://www.jobarrettbooks.com/home.htm.

About Jo Barrett. Jo earned a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin and a law degree from Georgetown University. She’s a former Capitol Hill staffer for Rep. Collin Peterson from Minnesota and worked at Cardozo Law School in New York City. She has edited several finance books, most notably, ‘The Essays of Warren Buffett: Lessons for Corporate America.’ She divides her time between Texas and New York City.

M. L. St. Sure’s New Novel, EVENSONG. A Look Back – Written by Book Critic, Lindsey Cook

M. L. St. Sure’s New Novel, EVENSONG. A Look Back – Written by Book Critic, Lindsey Cook

EVENSONG book cover

Des Moines, Iowa (PRWEB) November 13, 2008

With the Iraq War on everyone’s mind, sometimes it’s a good idea to look back at the past and try and learn some kind of lesson from it. While it’s not the original intention of Iowan author M. L. St. Sure, this is exactly what the new book entitled “EVENSONG” accomplishes.

“EVENSONG” is the story of Christina Cross who grew up on a farm in Missouri and learned how to sing opera from her war-scarred father. When her father dies unexpectedly, her mother throws her out of the house.

Christina is forced to try and find a job to support herself; she begins by being a maid in a hotel, but she is discovered by the owner who harnesses her talent and transforms her into an opera singer.

When Christina finds that her younger sister is being abandoned by her older abusive brother and that her mother is drinking, she decides to take her sister and escape to Europe.

Going to live with her uncle, Philippe Petain the premier of France in Paris, Christina immediately finds herself in the mix of World War II politics. When her uncle surrenders Paris and all of France to Hitler, she is forced to sing for the Nazis.

Recruited by French underground leader Laurent de Gauvion in the resistance, Christina begins to realize what is really going on in the war. She does everything she can to help, from caring for orphaned babies to infliltrating a Kinderkamp in Germany.

Christina’s journey makes us realize the costs of war and how they affect everyone, no matter what their role is.

A bittersweet story with a heart wrenching ending, “EVENSONG” is a beautifully written novel. St. Sure transports us into the vivid world of the 1940′s exploring everything from the lowest of the low to the highest of the high in the world.

Readers become extremely attached to Christina and her sister Nicolette because St. Sure’s characters are carefully crafted; they’re vivid, interesting and provide different perspectives about what is going on in the world around them. St. Sure makes sure that readers are privy to their loves, hate, vengeances and motivations.

The plot is fast-paced, taking you everywhere St. Sure needs you to go, while holding back on some of the more gruesome details. This is, after all, a story of one person’s encounter with the war, not an overview of the war.

The ending, while extremely sad, is appropriate and did not leave me feeling upset at the author, which is surprisingly unlike how other books have left me when faced with similar endings.

At only 214 pages long, the author still finds a way to fit everything that is needed to create a truly remarkable story. A lot of novels about World War II are extremely long with all the detail, while the shorter stories sometimes feel as if they don’t have enough information to make you feel fulfilled.

With short chapters and an interesting topic, this is a good read for anyone of any age or gender. It leaves you attached to the book until the very end. A great read that leaves you thinking about life while you’re stuck inside on a cold winter day.

Attorney, Eric Beal, Co-Authors a New Book on Texas Divorce and Family Law That Explores the Strategies and Challenges

Attorney, Eric Beal, Co-Authors a New Book on Texas Divorce and Family Law That Explores the Strategies and Challenges

Texas Divorce Attorney Eric D. Beal

Southlake, TX (PRWEB) October 26, 2010

Eric D. Beal, recognized Texas divorce lawyer and founder of BEAL LAW FIRM, has co-authored an authoritative, insiders perspective on the unique challenges facing those practicing family law today. From the Inside the Minds™ series, and titled Strategies for Family Law in Texas, the book targets practicing attorneys and others interested in recent trends and tips for life in the Texas family law arena. Beal brings his 20 years of experience to bear in discussing subjects important to both clients and other lawyers.

With a military law background from his days as a U.S. Marine Corps Legal Officer, Beal was asked to participate in the project along with six other respected family law attorneys, including J. Lindsey Short, Jr. and Mike McCurley. In Strategies for Family Law in Texas, Beal discusses a variety of topics, including key issues and deal-breakers in divorce cases, such as geographic restriction of the children’s residence and court-ordered alimony. Also included are thoughts on effective strategies for dealing with unrealistic client expectations and client concerns, as well as the interplay between the opposing counsel, opposing party, and trial judge. Additionally, there is a discussion of the UCCJEA, grandparent rights, child support, and the Texas law on torts that may arise from adultery.

“Consider each stage of the litigation carefully and analyze the true cost of a victory,” Beal advises, “prevailing on a seemingly important point at an early stage may ultimately prove counterproductive if it consumes too much of the client’s resources and weakens the remainder of the case.” With analogies to conservation of ammunition in a military firefight and bluffing in high-stakes poker, Strategies’ analysis is both fast-paced and entertaining.

Strategies for Family Law in Texas was released by Aspatore Books, a Thomson Reuters business, and is available through http://www.West.Thomson.com/Aspatore.

About Co-Author

Co-author Eric Beal graduated as the Highest Ranking Student (cum laude) from the Baylor School of Law in 1990. Prior to law school, Beal served as an Officer in the United States Marine Corps, where he graduated with honors from the Field Artillery Officer Basic Course and finished first in his class with a record score in the Military Justice Legal Officer’s Course.
