Retired Racing Greyhounds first run off-leash

Running off the lead for the first time together, retired racers Rolo and Mollie. Other greyhound owners will understand that this first time “running free” is a milestone, specially for the terrified owners. If that sounds bewildering, have a look at the greyhound trust www.retiredgreyhounds.co.uk for a lot of information about retired ex racing greyhounds, and how one (or two) might be the perfect dog for you and your family. These two are 4 and five years old. Retired greyhounds can be any age from two years old upwards, and 1000s need new forever-homes all the time. The muzzles you see on our two are to protect any small furry creatures that might be mistaken by the dogs as prey, Greyhounds are the gentlest of animals – real couch potatos. Gain a greyhound, lose a sofa.

Greyhounds- Running Out of Time

Greyhounds are beautiful, intelligent animals. Sadly, they are being exploited heavily by race track owners hoping to earn money at their expense. Greyhounds suffer from intense confinement, and thousands suffer from severe, oftentimes life threatening injuries each year. It is heartbreaking to watch as these animals race down the track. They are treated as if they were machines, or objects to be used at a whim. These are the same animals that we welcome into our homes as pets. What makes these greyhounds undeserving of compassion? Like the compassion we show the animals in our own homes? They surely are no different. If it were your dog, what would you say? While many tracks argue they love the dogs and that they receive great care, remember one fact: Why would anybody who loved dogs and regarded them with respect and compassion EVER make dogs participate in a “sport” where roughly 7600 (based on a 2000 statistic) puppies are killed because they aren´t fast enough, where retired track racers are usually just killed or sold off to a research lab, or where animals are frequently found with steroids in their blood? I for one will never be able to comprehend this. Greyhound racing needs to stop. A quote from Grey2K´s website: “We’ve seen this before … a madman called Hitler was doing it, trying to create a superrace. Well, they’re overbreeding, because they’re trying to get superdogs. These dogs were not unhealthy, just slow.” -Baldwin County District Attorney David

Greyhounds – Chariots of Fire

Note to All Viewers: This video is for the sole purpose of sharing the experience of the magnificent music of Vangelis and the Greyhound dog. This video is not being sold nor will it ever be offered for sale. This is a labour of love based on the “reasonable use” provisions of the Copyright Act. A special thank you to Sarah at www.artofthegreyhound.com for allowing me to use her wonderful sculptures and handsome “smiling” greyhound. Please visit her site to view more of her amazing pieces. Greyhound history dates back at least 4000 years. Originally from Egypt, they were taken by traders to Britain, Europe and the Orient. They were valued as hunters of such prey as gazelle, deer, fox, and rabbit. The sport of Greyhound racing (chasing a rabbit-like lure) has been around since the 16th Century, and some participants have been clocked at speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour. While racing takes advantage of this breeds natural ability, it is the fate of these beautiful animals when their racing days are over that has necessitated the organization of Greyhound rescues and adoptions around the world. These wonderful dogs, once rehabilitated with lots of love and patience, become well-behaved and much loved members of the family. Greyhounds for families with kids!

I was turned down by two Retired racing Greyhound adoption agencies because I had a child under the age of 5 years. Thankfully, I found “Elite Greyhound Adoptions” in West Palm Beach Florida. The Founder of this organization seems to feel the way I do… Not in every situation is a large dog right for a small child, or the child right for the dog. However there are many times when both the right family & right dog can come together & make a perfect match. As I’ve learned over the past year, many retired greyhound adoption agencies have very strict blanket policies. They will not waiver, even in cases where common sense is staring them straight in the face. We had a large retriever “Marylin” that had to be put down after a very expensive fight against cancer. This dog was large & sweet but often clumsy and would bump into our 3 year old daughter. She was used to this and familiar with having a large dog. Our other dog (a small mutt) is a fear biter. Our daughter knows & respects the fact that she cannot pet this dog because there’s a good chance that she’ll get bit. She fully understands this and she’s never tries to pet her unless we are there supervising. This being our background, and having explained this on my initial adoption attempts. I was blown away when I was first turned down for a 6 year old retired racer that was missing a front toe and walked with a heavy limp. “Flash” He had been with the agency for a really long time waiting for someone to try and adopt him
