World Food Prize Borlaug Symposium Sets Tone for Partnerships; Global Harvest Initiative Invites Private-Public Partners to Help Develop Blueprint for Change

Des Moines, IA (PRWEB) October 14, 2009

Agricultural leaders today opened the World Food Prize 2009 Borlaug Dialogue Symposium encouraging stakeholders to work collectively to achieve Norman Borlaug’s vision to develop and share meaningful agricultural innovations with farmers around the world. Borlaug, who was known as the father of the “green revolution,” died in September.

Speaking to a standing room only audience at the event’s opening ceremony, Ellen Kullman, chief executive officer, DuPont, and Patricia Woertz, chairman, CEO and president, Archer Daniels Midland Company, praised the World Food Prize and urged participants to come together to meet the agricultural needs of a growing world.

“We agree that we must double out agricultural output if we are to meet the needs of the world population in 2050,” said Kullman. “We believe this must be done in a sustainable way to reduce agriculture’s environmental footprint and conserve the precious resources available to us. We know it’s going to require cooperative efforts across industries and geographies, and between private and public entities. With all of us working toward a common goal, we can leverage many opportunities throughout the agriculture value chains to feed our growing, global population.”

The two CEOs were united in their call for new public-private partnerships that will encourage agricultural progress and challenge the status quo.

“Innovation on the farm – and improved yields alone – won’t be sufficient to meet future global demands. They must be accompanied by increased post-harvest investment,” Woertz said.

“We in the private sector can play an important role by making infrastructure investments that help build global markets and create economic opportunity,” said Woertz, noting that ADM is investing to expand its global sourcing, storage, transportation and processing capabilities.

“The World Food Prize, bolstered by the passion of Kenneth Quinn, has inspired a generation of researchers and continues to inspire leaders outside of traditional agriculture,” said Bill Lesher, Global Harvest Initiative executive director. “We are in a prime position to make the difference that Norman Borlaug envisioned. At no time have we encountered such a positive environment for change, such a diverse group of leaders primed to work together.”

Lesher urged public and private sector leaders to join the Global Harvest Initiative in developing a blueprint for change that promotes growth in developing and developed countries to close the global agricultural productivity gap – the difference between the current pace of output expansion and the pace required to meet future agricultural needs.

About the Global Harvest Initiative: The Global Harvest Initiative is dedicated to fostering new partnerships between agriculture, food security and conservation leaders to sustainably double agricultural output by 2050. She was Abducted by Mysterious People Whose Mission was to Change the World One Person at a Time – What They Had Not Anticipated Was her Vile Temper and the Fact That No One Wanted Her Back

(PRWEB) April 22, 2004

Autumn Rose Publishing LLC hits the presses again with another intriguing novel, Abductee, a story of a bizarre mission to change people. Once again sisters, Lorraine and Lynnita Mattock, join efforts to achieve their common goal: providing wholesome yet intriguing books for readers.

While perusing a menu outside a posh restaurant, author, Lynnita Mattock, and publisher, Lorraine Mattock, came face to face with snobbery in the form of a smartly dressed woman escorted by an equally well-dressed gentleman. Lorraine inadvertently stepped back and brushed up against the woman who gasped with obvious disdain. The gentleman grasped her elbow and steered her away from the offending sisters.

“The experience was an eye-opener and really embarrassed Lorraine – not so much bumping into her, but the lady’s recoiling reaction. It was as though she had touched vermin.” Lynnita laughs as she remembers the encounter. “I began asking myself how difficult would it be to change someone like that. Change her into a person who would react with graciousness rather than disgust.”

With those thoughts racing around in her mind, Lynnita began conjuring up a novel which soon grew into Abductee, a 232-page novel with a variety of settings including the mountains of Colorado, Michigan’s lower peninsula, and the sultry Virgin Islands. A stealthy group of people whose mission is to transform the world one person at a time abduct individuals whom they feel need changing.

“When they kidnap Mary Jo, they are faced with a woman who in no uncertain terms refuses to cooperate and, on top of that, has a behavioral disorder which they have absolutely no idea how to handle. The interactions between abductee and abductors become so tangled that the mission itself is threatened,” Lynnita says.

Abductee is published by Lorraine’s company, Autumn Rose Publishing LLC. Established In 2003, Autumn Rose Publishing LLC is a result of the two sisters learning how to deal with each other’s quirky imaginations and different work styles to attain their goal of creating great books. Autumn Rose Publishing LLC can be visited at http://www.autumnrosepublishing.com.

Lorraine uses her technical skills to develop websites, forums, and graphic art displays. She has designed the covers of her sister’s first two novels, Silent Flight, Devoted Pursuit and Break Free. Lynnita writes the books and many of the marketing articles as well. Both have developed the marketing plans, advertising strategies, and sales for the books.

Lynnita Mattock’s Silent Flight, Devoted Pursuit, is a fictional work about two sisters searching for their missing aunt. Midwest Book Review describes it as a “dramatic, searing saga.” Break Free is a fast-paced novel about a woman attacked by a mountain lion. Visit http://www.FromTheAuthorToYou.com for more details on her books.

Lynnita also penned the non-fiction book, When Our Parents Need Us: Caring for Aging Parents, a poignant story of a valiant family caring for their terminally ill father. The book’s website is at http://www.whenourparents.com.

Amputee Runner Shatters Marathon World Record

Amputee Runner Shatters Marathon World Record

Hicksville, NY (PRWEB) May 27, 2006

On Sunday May 21st, Amy Winters, a below-knee amputee from Meadville Pennsylvania, finished the Cleveland Marathon in 3:26:19, knocking more than 27 minutes off the previous best time for a female amputee.

The world-record comes only three months after Ms. Winters received her first running prosthesis from A Step Ahead Prosthetics, a company specializing in the treatment of young, active, elite amputee athletes from around the world. Ms. Winters averaged a 7:51 mile/minute pace, finishing 20th overall out of 3399 female runners, placing her in the top 1% percent of all female able-bodied competitors

Ms. Winters a 33 year-old welder and mother of two, lost her leg following a 1994 motorcycle accident. Twenty-five surgeries and three years later, her left leg was amputated below the knee. Following the amputation, it took 3 years before Ms. Winters could even try to run again.

“I was told in 1994 I wouldn’t run again,” Ms. Winters said. “That lit a spark in me. I got a second chance in life with this special prosthesis.”

After receiving the running prosthesis from A Step Ahead, Ms. Winters was provided extensive professional training and advice as a member of Team A Step Ahead. This multi-disciplinary approach to her training regimen involved prosthetists, physical therapists, and other elite amputee athletes who are also Team A Step Ahead members.

With only three months in her new running leg, Ms. Winters’ world record does not represent the culmination of a career, but rather, merely a starting point. Her competitive plans for this year include competing in the New York City Triathlon, the World Triathlon Championships in Switzerland and a ½ Ironman Triathlon in San Diego.

“I eventually plan to also do the Ironman Triathlon in Hawaii,” says Ms. Winters, who lists being the first female amputee to run a 100 mile ultra marathon as another future goal. Whatever she sets her mind to, it is clear that Ms. Winters is intent on satisfying the challenge issued by her prosthetist: “Live life without limitations!”

A Step Ahead Prosthetics is located in Hicksville, New York, and sponsors Team A Step Ahead, a group of elite amputee athletes from around the world who participate in high-level events like the Paralympics, Hawaii Ironman Triathlon, and marathons. Team A Step Ahead members hold or have held world records in the 100 m (female, above-knee amputee), 200 m (female, above-knee), 400 m (female, above knee), and marathon (female, above-knee and below-knee). Members also receive training from coaches with expertise training amputee athletes, including many Paralympians. In addition to providing customized athletic prostheses and related services to high-end athletes, A Step Ahead has developed the Skin Tones silicone covering, which protects prosthetic components while flawlessly duplicating the missing limb(s).

E-Spec, Inc Unveils Image Exchange v1.1 at Spesa Material World, Allowing Users to Automatically Convert Adobe® Illustrator® Files To JPG or GIF

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) May 8, 2007 –-

Dallas-based E-Spec, Inc. used their visibility at SPESA to announce the launch of their latest product, Image Exchange v1.1. This Windows-based server side application automatically converts Adobe® Illustrator® images to JPG or GIF format.

Image Exchange v1.1, a Windows-based server side application, allows a watched folder location to be created on the network where users can save or drop Illustrator® files to automatically produce a JPG or GIF copy of the file in the same location, alternate location, or FTP site. It is not necessary for the user to have the Adobe® Illustrator® software on their computer in order to execute this function.

This software currently works with Illustrator® images to make either JPG or GIF files. Future product release versions are expected to include additional input and output file format options. This program enables a variety of users to utilize the same files in a number of capacities without requiring each one to master the use of Illustrator® or keep going back to the art department for various outputs. A demonstration is available on their website for those who were unable to attend the SPESA show.

“In many industries, websites and business applications require small representative versions of artwork and graphics. In fast paced environments, such as fashion, advertising and publishing, keeping these representations up to date with the original files can be burden on the artists. Automating this process ensures accuracy as well as freeing up the artist to concentrate on their creative tasks.” noted Dan Hudson, President E-Spec, Inc.

As an Adobe® Solutions Partner, E-Spec also, recently introduced JPEG Publisher v5.0 for Adobe® Illustrator®. This plug-in automatically generates JPEG files every time an Adobe® Illustrator® file is created or edited in one or more specified locations. This plug-in includes a layer separation option which allows the user to separate multi-layered AI files into separate JPG files for each layer.

Well-known to apparel retailers and manufacturers, E-Spec, Inc.’s range of off the shelf solutions are designed to work as stand-alone solutions or in concert as end-to-end productivity enhancements with programs such as Adobe® Illustrator®, Acrobat and Microsoft® Office. These new products begin to expand E-Spec’s user base outside of the apparel industry.

World Trade Center Images in Educational Video for Kids Stir Up Debate: Should the Towers Come Out?

Aberdeen, New Jersey (PRWEB) February 20, 2004 -

Images of the Twin Towers appearing in the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island episode of the children’s video series “Dave and Augie’s Home Movies” have stirred up a recent debate at schools in Central New Jersey and at an online educator’s forum. Some teachers feel that brief scenes of the towers at the beginning of episode one of the puppet-hosted history series are disturbing to its K-4 viewers and need to be edited out while others are greatly opposed to their removal.

Gregory Ciano, the owner of Freggie Entertainment, the company that produced the video, was first approached about editing out the Towers after he performed an assembly at a South Brunswick school in New Jersey: “When I read the school’s feedback form comments I was shocked. They were vehemently against the images remaining in the video.” Despite the negative comments, Ciano decided to leave the Towers in believing that it was important to remain faithful to reality even if it was disturbing to some young viewers. However, several months later, when teachers at an East Brunswick school made the same request, Ciano began to seriously rethink his initial decision: “I didn’t know what to do when I remembered that my sister Dawn, our Head Researcher and Education Specialist, participated in an online teachers forum, so I asked her to do a survey.” All of the teachers who responded to the survey were greatly in favor of leaving the Towers in, and some were incredulous that anyone had even suggested editing them out.

The positive response was a great relief to Ciano who commented: “When we first produced the tape we had no idea it would one day become so controversial. We just wanted to do a fun, educational show about an important American monument. But, I don’t have any regrets. The post-9/11 significance of those two towers is too important to leave them on the cutting room floor. We have an obligation to tell children the truth about our history even if it’s sometimes painful.”
